Man, Woman vs The Wild

" We are going to the woods for the night", my husband announces out of thin air. Ok I know we haven't spent much time together, and I am in midthought have I done something wrong? A date night is rare these days. Our life pretty much revolves around work, kids, work, kids and did I mention work? My husband is huge outdoorsman. He is surviorman on steriods (have you seen this show? boring!) and armed. See where this going? Moving on.

One night packing is hard for me to do, but I am a work in progress. I finally decided on what was going in my camo backpack (yes I said my camo backpack), and take a deep breath while repeating to myself " Date night, date night." Im all giddy of the thought of snuggling by a fire and romatically gazing into each others eyes with the blazing stars above. I watch way too many movies. Hopeless romantic.

The ride up to our camping spot is non eventful and Im starting to feel my shoulders loosening up some. Maybe my husband is actually on to something ( shh we don't want him to know). The higher we drive the more I seem to be smiling. I may actually may make it out alive. Again way too many lame B-rated horror movies. I'm thinking either Deliverence or Wrong Turn.

I used to camp, fish, see daylight in my time, but not lately. Come to think of it I even have seen my knight in shining armor more than once a week in another lifetime. Work, kids, work and or did I mention work? This overnight trip may be what the love doctor ordered. I am even getting a little giggly.

As we wind and twist into the mountains I look at my cell phone and realize there is no service. Really? This could get interesting. About 40 mins or so into the drive we turn onto a dirt road. Lots of scratches on the new car and so much mud we almost blend in with the open range cattle. After pulling into a few places and going through a few deep puddles, man has chosen the spot. It looks nice. I think this is gonna work out..away from the road and I'm thinking about some X rated thoughts. Let's get this site set up fast!

I am not sure why or how this happened, but he is putting up the shelter and I automatically start gathering wood. What the heck? Shouldn't it be the other way around? I really should have paid more attention in World History class. I decide to to go with the flow and Im checking out the most awesome mushrooms ( later to find out they are used for naughty reasons later.) In no time camp is set. We are ready for a beer and the best hotdogs cooked on the fire EVER!

Neither one of us are big drinkers, and the beer actually tasted good. Nature is all around us. Gentle wind, birds singing and campfire smoke blowing in my face. AHH. We give each other that look. I'll spare you the details. It seem everytime I want to get romantic with my husband either the phone rings, people come to the door or the kids decide they need us. We are in the middle of NOWHERE. I know we are so alone. We are like two teenagers and then...Yup there is a truck that drives by. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So much for romance, but hey we have someone to throw to the bear if we need to. I'm neighborly share and share alike.

We decided to explore and he drives me to all the places he has camped and the views are breathtaking. My hunter is the best. With him, I realize when the zombies attack my chances are really good for survival after all. HA facebook survey you are wrong. Man grunts " I want to show you something, Don't worry it is a short walk." I am out of shape and a smoker. It better be. We get out of the car and start to walk, walk walk and oh walk some more. Short walk my ass. He says " I don't remember where it is". Great. As a plus I saw more really cool mushrooms. Not bad after all.

We get back to camp, get the fire going and play cards. They make them in real life and not on a computer. Ooooh. We have a friendly game and decide it is bedtime! Did I mention we forgot to make sure there was nothing under the tent? I tossed and turned on a peice of wood and so did he. Oops. I finally drift off to the sounds of the soft wind and crickets chirping, then out of nowhere Man jumps up, grabs his gun and has "that feeling". Now I never dismiss that because he has been on the money a few times and either a cougar or a bear has wandered in on him before. I am awake and now worried. Oh did I mention it is 30 degrees outiside? He looks he checks and waits. Nothing so far, he comes back and we drift off again. Soon I hear howling that is almost right near our camp site. Two coyotes. I look over at my strong provider for support. He is rolled over snoring and doesn't stir. My heart melts.

The next morning he rises and claims he never heard coyotes but felt his wood under him ( i giggle), and he makes me coffee. Time to head back to reality. We pack up the campsite and put out our fire. I look at my Man with more pride and he is sexier than ever. I know I am Wiccan and of course love nature and all that, but I love to camp like old people with money and a Winnebego the size of my house. He made it fun and actually a great adventure. What a date night to rememeber. I am a lucky girl. Everyday he reminds that I can do anything. As we head back to our real life I think Man, Woman Vs Nature...Us 1, Nature 1..we are even.
